Holycross Abbey is a restored Cistercian monastery, situated on the scenic River Suir in the tranquil and picturesque medieval village of Holycross near Thurles and just 35 minutes from us here at Great National Ballykisteen Golf Hotel.
Holycross Abbey founded in 1168 by the King of Munster has a rich history and was one of the most popular pilgrim destinations in medieval Ireland. Pilgrims travelled to Holycross Abbey for up to eight centuries to venerate Abbey’s sacred relic – The True Cross from where the Abbey got its name. The relic was set in gold and adorned with precious stones and is believed to have been brought to Ireland by Queen Isabella of Angoulême around 1233.

Holycross Abbey is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm and Sunday 10.30am to 6pm
The Gift Shop is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 11.30am to 5pm and has a beautiful range of Religious Goods, Ornaments, Soveniers, First Holy Communion & Confirmation Gifts, Christening Gifts, Jewellery and much more along with tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
