The Vee Gap in Tipperary
The Vee is named after a hairpin bend on the road which climbs up the mountains from Clogheen, but can also be taken as a reference to the V-shape of the gap between the mountains when viewed from afar. In Irish, the Vee is known as Bothar na gCorr, which means ‘’road of the angels’’ or ‘’road of the round hill’’. This road travels towards Lismore and was built in 1841. From here you can enjoy spectacular views of the Galtees, Comeraghs, and Slieenamon. If the weather is especially clear you can pick out the Rock of Cashel on the horizon with the Devil’s Bit in the distance beyond it.
This scenic mountain drive will take you past Bay Lough to Lismore and Cappoquin in county Waterford as well as the famous Mount Melleray Abbey, on the left before you come to Cappoquin. If walking is your thing, then the area around the Vee, Bay Lough, Loughglenbridge, Sugar Loaf Hill, Knockshanahullion and Gortacullen Wood (just under the Vee following the Tipperary Heritage Way sign) offer a multitude of choices no matter what type of road walking or mountain climbing you fancy.
Start point: Walk begins from the parking place (S027 113) beside the first hairpin bend beyond Clogheen on the R668
Time: About 3.5 hours
Suitability: Moderately challenging outing for walkers with adequate fitness and navigation skills
